KENSINGTON, LONDON

Kensington, London | A Suite Designed to Grow

Having worked with this family over many years, including on their Kensington townhouse, a villa in Cyprus and their home in Canada, it was a pleasure to return a decade after first designing the daughter’s suite, aged 7, to reimagine it as she approached adulthood.

The first time around, we designed the reconfiguration of two adjoining rooms beneath the eaves to create a private suite for the client’s 7 year o d daughter, bringing together a bedroom, sitting area, walk-in wardrobe and en-suite bathroom within a cohesive and carefully planned upper-floor retreat.

We improved flow and cohesion, introducing interior architectural elements to define each area while maintaining a sense of openness. A distinctive curved arch frames a deep alcove within the roofline, where we designed a bespoke built-in bed to span the full width of the space. Concealed trundle beds allow the room to comfortably accommodate visiting friends, while hand-painted tiles interior design bathroom, layered fabrics and soft colours create an enchanting environment that feels both personal and imaginative.

In the second phase of the project, when she was 17, the suite was reimagined to reflect a more mature and sophisticated sensibility, while retaining a sense of femininity and whimsy.

We transformed the alcove from a canopy bed into a relaxed sitting area with a bespoke sofa, while new textiles, wallpaper and furnishings introduced a richer and more sophisticated palette suited to a young adult returning home between university terms and beyond.

We also redesigned the adjoining bathroom, lining it with iridescent mosaic tiles across walls, floor and ceiling to create a softly reflective surface that shifts subtly throughout the day as natural light enters the room.

Together, these two phases of the suite illustrate how thoughtful interior architecture can allow a space to evolve naturally over time — supporting the changing needs of its occupant while preserving the character and intention of the original design.
