Cator Estate, Blackheath, London

Following the interior reconfiguration of the house, shown in a separate project, the client commissioned a complete redesign and specification of the outdoor spaces. With the new architecture being distinctly contemporary, the brief was to create a landscape that would feel calm and sculptural, while also providing spaces suited to entertaining.

We designed the upper terrace as a tranquil oasis overlooking the garden, while a dramatic sunken garden was introduced beneath the bridge leading to the main house - a natural gathering point for the client’s frequent parties and events. An ancient obelisk, preserved from the historic grounds, was retained as a focal point and set against a series of modern interventions.

The scheme includes two fire tables, a fully equipped outdoor kitchen and bar, and a sunken jacuzzi, creating a sequence of spaces suited both to lively entertaining and relaxed weekend afternoons, with a balance of sunny terraces and shaded corners.

As the client travels frequently for business, the landscape was designed to be relatively low maintenance, combining carefully selected planting with artificial elements to ensure the garden remains structured and visually appealing throughout the year.
